Are facial masks right for you?

We have all seen the pictures online of women (and men) sharing their horror stories of using face masks or facial peels at home. If you are one of them, I am sorry you had a bad experience with them. If you are still looking to try the masks, stick around to see some great options for you - no matter your skin type.

A facial mask is a creamy or thick pasted mask applied to clean or smoothen the face. Facial masks often contain minerals, vitamins, and fruit extracts, such as cactus and cucumber. A sheet mask is a piece of paper, cellulose or fabric used to apply a facial mask.

Ever since antiquity, Egyptians have been known to be quite the beauty enthusiasts. From bathing in Donkey milk to slathering on honey, there are numerous ingredients that women used daily to enhance their appearances. The first Egyptian face masks were formulated out of clay. It is said that Cleopatra (the paragon of beauty) applied a dead sea mud face mask to draw out impurities. Additionally, she also applied egg white face masks to tighten the pores. Oh, and there were also crocodile dung face masks that supposedly bestowed a youthful appearance.

The first official facial mask was invented in Ohio, United States, during the 19th century by Madame Rowley. It was called the "Toilet Mask" or the first "face glove", and was advertised as able to 'bleach, purify and preserve the complexion' of the skin. It was patented in 1875.

We have definitely come a long way from the days of using pure bleach and crocodile dung to make our skin look and feel healthier! Today, there are face masks for pretty much every skin type and skin issue. One specific brand of face masks, The Face Shop/The Solution Advanced Face Masks, gave five specially formulated choices.

Hydrating - with hyaluronic acid, which holds 1,000 times its weight in water, helps skin look youthfully plumped & baby-soft.

Brightening - with pearl powder, for a healthy-looking & luminescent glow.

Pore Care - with tannic acid, a natural astringent that helps reduce shine & visibly shrink pores.

Firming - with marine (hydrolyzed) collagen to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles & visibly restore firmness and radiance.

Nourishing - with antioxidant-enriched propolis extract (tree sap, bee food and beeswax) to restore the look of healthy vitality to tired skin.

As you can see, no matter what you are looking for, this product line has got you covered. If you have never used a face mask like this before, please take note of the following:

  1. Use your cleanser BEFORE applying a facial mask. Apply cleanser as normal and rinse off completely before applying the mask.

  2. Smooth the face gently over your face. Avoid your eyes, mouth and eyebrows as much as possible.

  3. Let the mask rest for 10-15 minutes.

  4. Once it is time to peel the mask off, remember to do it slowly and gently. Removing it too quickly will just damage your skin. Take your time!

  5. Once your mask is completely removed, apply your normal moisturizer while the skin is still damp to lock in hydration.

  6. Sit back and enjoy the results!

You can apply a face mask 1-2 times a week if you like. Just don't overdo it. If you are already on a good daily facial routine, once a week will be OK for a face mask.

As always, you can find more information about these products and so much more at avon.com/repstore/avonwithmissy.
